At 52, Ernest is a determined survivor.

He's lived through homelessness, addiction, a divorce, AIDS, and cancer.

He dropped out of school in the 8th grade and earned a living on the streets, embracing drugs and crime to support himself.

At one point he wanted to die and questioned why God spared him. He always knew this wasn't the way he wanted to live.

After stabilizing his health and dealing with his recovery issues, he found The Harbor and sees the program as a long-term partner while he changes his life.

He has worked hard in the 12 months since he came to stay at The Harbor--continued his recovery and learned new life skills. For the first time, he has a savings account and a plan for the future.

"The Harbor is my miracle," he says.

And he wants others to know there is always hope.

He dreams someday of becoming a substance abuse counselor so he can help others understand that the future is a good place. And he thinks maybe the reason he was spared is to tell his story and share his miracle.
